The Numbers Just Keep Getting Worse for Ms. Clinton

Democrats 2008: Hillary 30%, Obama 26%

April 20, 2007

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Fewer Democratic Party supporters in the United States believe Hillary Rodham Clinton should become their presidential nominee, according to a poll by Opinion Research Corporation released by CNN. 30 per cent of respondents would vote for the New York senator in a 2008 primary, down seven points since March.

Illinois senator Barack Obama is second with 26 per cent, followed by former U.S. vice-president Al Gore with 15 per cent, and former North Carolina senator John Edwards with 12 per cent. Support is lower for New Mexico governor Bill Richardson, Delaware senator Joe Biden, Ohio congressman Dennis Kucinich, Connecticut senator Chris Dodd, and reverend Al Sharpton.

On Apr. 18, Obama commented on the topic of violence in the aftermath of a brutal incident at Virginia Tech University—where a student killed 32 people and himself—declaring, "I hope there will be some discussion of violence in all its forms. We glorify it, encourage it, ignore it. It’s heartbreaking. And it has to stop."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
