For Some Clinton Supporters, Sexism Is the Only Explanation
Many Women's Hopes of Seeing First Female President Are Tied to Clinton Going the Distance

As Sen. Hillary Clinton has raced toward the end of what appears to be a losing bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, she has voiced what her most fervent supports have been saying -- her campaign has been dissed and damaged by people "who are nothing but misogynists."
In unusually blunt comments, Clinton told the Washington Post that sexism has played a larger role in the campaign than racism and that it has cost her and her supporters.
"It's been deeply offensive to millions of women. I believe this campaign has been a groundbreaker in a lot of ways," Clinton said. "But it certainly has been challenging given some of the attitudes in the press."

Clinton, the first woman to make a serious bid for a major party's presidential nomination, said she did not think that racism was a factor in her bruising battle with Sen. Barack Obama.
Instead, she said, "The manifestation of some of the sexism that has gone on in this campaign is somehow more respectable, or at least more accepted."
She added, "It does seem as though the press at least is not as bothered by the incredible vitriol that has been engendered by the comments by people who are nothing but misogynists."
Clinton is expected to easily win the Kentucky Democratic primary today, but lose to Obama in Oregon. A split would give Obama a majority of delegates, but Clinton is showing no inclination to quit the race.
Her campaign aides told ABC News that she intends to keep campaigning through the final primary on June 3. Clinton also took a shot at Obama for acting as if he has already won and not even campaigning in Kentucky.
"You know, the last thing we need is somebody who gives up and quits as our next president," she told supporters Monday.
Many women are as determined as Clinton that the campaign continue. "NOT SO FAST" reads the headline in a full-page ad in The New York Times paid for by the WomenCount PAC.
The ad begins, "We are the women of this nation &" and says that there should not be pressure for Clinton to concede already. "As this indefatigable woman campaigns, she speaks with our voice," the ad claims.
ABC News political contributor Cokie Roberts said she sees the phenomenon in Kentucky, where voting is under way.
"In Kentucky, women voters, one after another are saying, why are people pushing her? Why are they saying sit down and shut up? And there's a lot of resentment about that. A lot of those women had the same thing happen to them."
ABC political analyst Matthew Dowd, however, said he believed it was Clinton's message that hurt her campaign.
"I tell people that I think the country was ready for a mom, but she kept giving the country a dad," Dowd said.
Clinton's comments in the Washington Post echo what many of her supporters have bitterly complained about as the long Democratic battle has neared an end -- that she is treated differently because she's a woman and if she eventually loses, it will be because of her gender.
Clinton, they charge, has been criticized for things that a male candidate would never take heat for -- her appearance, her emotions, her spouse's sex life.
And many of her female supporters worry that their chance to see a woman elected U.S. president ends with Clinton.
Many older women who supported feminism as young women, and encountered resistance and frustration as they broke through barriers, saw Clinton's rise to the race for the White House as an important symbolic breakthrough for women. Now, with Clinton's defeat seemingly near, some see the echoes of that resistance and frustration of earlier battles and some are even turning their ire toward Obama.
"Women are just apoplectic about the sexism that has come out in course of the campaign," said Cynthia Ruccia, spokeswoman for Clinton Supporters Count Too, a women's group threatening to boycott the election and abandon the Democratic Party.
While Ruccia and members of her group, made up of women from Ohio, Pennsylvania and other swing states, believe Clinton remains very much in the race, they are preparing for an Obama nomination.
"If Hillary Clinton is not the nominee, we will not support the nominee," she said.
Interest in this year's election from younger voters may make for good headlines, Ruccia said, but it is middle-age women who are the "party regulars [that] stuff envelopes and put out lawn signs."
"Young people don't understand how far we've come and how hard we've worked to get here. They can't see what it took for us to ensure that Clinton would have a chance at the White House. We have been out there fighting these fights and we've made progress. But as soon as she started running, all this sexist garbage comes out," she said
Ruccia pointed to examples of pervasive sexism in the media by citing the remarks from three members of the media: Chris Matthews ("the reason she's a U.S. senator, the reason she's a candidate for president, the reason she may be a front-runner, is that her husband messed around"); Mike Barnicle ("when she reacts the way she reacts to Obama with just the look, the look toward him, looking like everyone's first wife standing outside a probate court"); and David Shuster (Clinton "pimped out" her daughter, Chelsea, by having her call superdelegates.)
But some say the unkindest cut of the entire campaign came not from commenters, the Obama camp or even Republicans, but the abortion-rights group NARAL.
In an unexpected, and some say unnecessary, move, NARAL Pro-Choice America officially announced its support of Obama last week, just three days after he swept the North Carolina primary, picking up a significant number of delegates.
"For many feminists, NARAL's decision seemed like a real defection. There was no reason for them to make a statement like that when they did," said Vicky Lovell, director of the employment program at the Institute for Women's Policy Research.
Both Ruccia and Lovell said the endorsement irked many women, and served as a point around which Clinton could rally many of her faithful.
Her supporters are adamant, as is she, that she continue to campaign until all the states have held their primaries and all the votes are counted.
Clinton continues to press on, arguing that delegates from Michigan and Florida should be counted, despite the decision by the Democratic Party to boycott primaries in those states after those states moved up their elections in the calendar against party wishes.
"This is the United States and she should absolutely have the right to go ahead," said Linda Seditsky, a retired teacher from Queens, N.Y., who supports Clinton. "It is ridiculous the way people have talked about her looks or her clothes. No one ever talks about McCain being bald. There is this negativity around her and a lot of it comes from the media, writing her off and saying she doesn't have a chance."
In an ABC News-Washington Post poll, nearly a quarter of Clinton supporters said if she loses, they will vote for Republican nominee Sen. John McCain of Arizona over Obama.
For now, however, polling data indicate female Clinton supporters are no more likely to vote for McCain over Obama than male supporters.
"I'm torn. I don't know what I'm going to do," said Seditsky. "I don't want to vote for McCain, but I would find it very difficult to vote for Obama."
Lovell said Clinton's defeat would not spell a defeat for feminism or a future female presidential candidate.
"Women will always have to work harder than men to prove their competence. A man would never be subjected to the same treatment," she said. "It will be hugely disappointing to many women if Clinton is unable to go the distance. But there are plenty of very strong women in public office and other venues who will pick up the torch. Without a doubt, a woman will be president."
BRYAN, Texas (May 17) - A minister from a Dallas-area Baptist megachurch was caught in an Internet sex sting and charged with online solicitation of a minor, police said Friday.

Joe Barron is the minister for married adults at Prestonwood Baptist Church.
Undercover officers posing as a 13-year-old girl communicated with Joe Barron, 52, of Plano for about two weeks. The online conversations were sexual in nature, police said.
On May 6, Barron suggested meeting the girl in person. He eventually made the nearly 200-mile drive to Bryan on Thursday, when he was arrested. Police said they found a web-cam and condoms in his car.
Barron was released Friday night from the Brazos County Jail on bond. Police were unsure whether he had an attorney.
Barron is one of 40 ministers at Prestonwood Baptist Church, one of the largest churches in the country with 26,000 members. He ministers to married adults.
Mike Buster, executive pastor, said in a statement that the church had no record or knowledge of previous improprieties or saw any inappropriate behavior in the 18 months Barron was on the church staff.
Buster said church officials are fully cooperating with police.
"We are disturbed and saddened by the reports we have heard and we are praying for the Barron family," he said.
U.S. military reports 2,688 sex assault claims in 2007
WASHINGTON - The U.S. military recorded 2,688 cases of sexual assault involving its staff last year, 60 percent of which were allegations of rape, a Department of Defense report said Friday.
The majority of the cases -- 72 percent -- involved military victims, the report covering the period from October 2006 to September 2007 said.
Investigations resulted in 181 courts martial, while 201 cases resulted in non-judicial punishment and 218 cases led to administrative action or discharges.
Some 1,040 completed probes resulted in no action, either due to insufficient evidence or because those responsible were civilians, foreigners or unidentified.
A total of 112 reports of sexual assault were reported among forces serving in Iraq, and 19 cases among those serving in Afghanistan.
Among complaints by military staff, where the alleged victim agreed to an outside criminal investigation, 868 (57 percent) reported rape, 91 forcible sodomy -- defined as anal or oral sex -- and 551 indecent assault.
Of the 705 cases where victims asked to remain anonymous and for no further action to be taken, 489 (69 percent) involved rape, 39 alleged forcible sodomy and 125 indecent assault.
The report also recorded allegations by civilians against members of the military. Of a total of 574 cases reported last year, 391 involved rape, 33 forcible sodomy and 150 indecent assault.
Direct comparisons cannot be made with last year's figures because the department has since changed the reporting period from the calendar year to the fiscal year. However, the report notes the figures have remained broadly stable.
"The Department of Defense remains committed to eliminating sexual assault from military service," it said, citing a "robust" prevention and response policy, improved reporting procedures, better training and increased care provision.
A Department of Defense survey also released Friday revealed that 34 percent of women on active duty and six percent of men have experienced sexual harrassment, while 6.8 percent of women and 1.8 percent of men experienced unwanted sexual contact.
The problem was more widespread among women serving in the army, as was the problem of sexual discrimination, while unwanted sexual advances among men were more common in the navy, the 2006 gender relations survey reveals.
The majority of respondents who said they had had unwanted sexual contact did not report it, mainly because they felt uncomfortable doing so.
However, the vast majority were aware of complaint procedures and most expected reports of sexual harassment to be taken seriously. Some 93 percent also said they had received training on the subject in the past year.
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, a key backer of Hillary Clinton and a rising Democrat star who rose to prominence rooting out corruption, was facing calls to resign Tuesday over allegations he paid thousands of dollars to a prostitute.
Elliot Spitzer was a political ally of presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, who sidestepped the scandal.
Spitzer immediately apologized to his family and the people of New York but did not elaborate on the scandal.
At a hastily convened news conference in Albany, the state capital, he confessed Monday to an undisclosed personal indiscretion, saying he had acted "in a way that violates my obligations to my family."
"I have disappointed and failed to live up to the standard I expected of myself," the 48-year-old father of three teenage girls said. "I must now dedicate some time to regain the trust of my family." Watch as Spitzer faces calls to quit »
Once seen as a rising star within the Democratic party, Spitzer took office in January 2007 with a landslide victory after serving eight years as the state's attorney general. But the scandal raises questions about whether he will make it through a second year.
"I think there's no question if he is involved -- and I'm not saying he is, because we don't know all the facts -- I would say he'd have to resign," said James Tedisco, the Republican minority leader in the state Assembly.

The Republican Governors Association called on Spitzer to resign to "allow the people of New York to pursue honest leadership."
"The American people are tired of corrupt and hypocritical politicians. The governor of New York is just another in the long list of politicians that have failed their constituents," said Nick Ayers, executive director of the Governors Association.
U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton sidestepped questions about the sex scandal threatening her home state governor and political ally.
"I don't have any comment on that," she said when asked about the allegations. "Obviously, I am sending my best wishes and thoughts to the governor and to his family," Clinton said.
The allegations, revealed Monday in The New York Times, were outlined in federal court papers detailing a meeting in a Washington hotel room last month between a prostitute and a client who a source told CNN was Spitzer.
The affidavit does not mention Spitzer by name, but a source with knowledge of the case said the subject identified as Client-9 is the governor. He has not been charged.
His alleged involvement with the ring was caught on a federal wiretap, the source said.
The prostitute, identified only as "Kristen" worked for the Emperors Club, which charged between $1,000 and $5,500 an hour and operated in New York; Los Angeles, California; Miami, Florida; London, England; and Paris, France, according to court papers.
According to the affidavit, defendant Temeka Rachelle Lewis -- who is accused of working as a booking agent for the club -- wrote a text message Monday, February 11, asking the operation's day-to-day organizer to "pls let me know if (Client-9's) 'package' arrives 2mrw. Appt wd be on Wed." Prosecutors say the message was a reference to a deposit.
On Tuesday, according to the affidavit, Lewis sent a message to Kristen, saying Client-9's deposit had not arrived but she should be able to "do the trip" if it arrived the next day. View a gallery of recent political sex scandals »

In a later conversation, Lewis and Kristen discussed when the prostitute could take a train from New York's Penn Station to Washington's Union Station, the affidavit says. Client-9 would be "paying for everything -- train tickets, cab fare from the hotel and back, mini bar or room service, travel time, and hotel."
The affidavit says that, about 5 p.m. Tuesday, February 12, Lewis spoke with Client-9 on the telephone and told him that his "package arrived today." The client asked Lewis whom he would be meeting and, when told it was Kristen, said, "Great, OK, wonderful."
The two discussed how the woman would get a key to his room for a Wednesday rendezvous and how they could arrange credit for future services.
"Client-9 asked Lewis to remind him what Kristen looked like and Lewis said that she was an American, petite, very pretty brunette, 5 feet 5 inches and 105 pounds," the affidavit reads.
In a call to Lewis, Client-9 was told the balance would be $2,712.41, but Lewis suggested he give Kristen $1,500 or $2,000 more so that he would have a credit.
According to the affidavit, Kristen called Lewis about 9:32 p.m. Wednesday, February 13, and told her she was in Client-9's room -- No. 871 -- at the Washington hotel.
Four minutes later, Client-9 was in the hotel, Lewis told Kristen in another call.
No more calls were logged until 12:02 a.m. Thursday -- Valentine's Day -- nearly 2½ hours later. At that time, Kristen told Lewis Client-9 had left and she had collected $4,300.
Lewis told the prostitute she'd been told that Client-9 "would ask you to do things that, like, you might not think are safe -- you know -- I mean that ... very basic things," the affidavit says.
Spitzer, who built his career on rooting out public corruption as New York attorney general, became a national figure with a series of high-profile Wall Street investigations. He is also known for prosecuting prostitution rings. Read Todd Benjamin's blog.
People who know Spitzer, 48, were surprised by the allegations. "To say this is a shock is an understatement," said CNN senior legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin, who went to law school with Spitzer.

Revelations about Senator Larry Craig that have mired the Republicans in another sex scandal over the past few days continue to rumble across the media spectrum - but the true scale of perversion, organized child sex slavery rings and their connections to the elite is uniformly omitted from polite conversation.
Last year, Republican Rep. Mark Foley was investigated by the FBI after he sent sexually suggestive e mails to boys working as congressional pages. It later emerged that House leaders had known for months about Foley's lurid behavior yet chose to look the other way. Foley was co-chairman of the Congressional Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus.
Larry Craig, albeit on a lesser scale, has now been exposed as a pervert and the media treadmill continues to afford this individual case blanket coverage - a deluge of attention not received by the thousands of missing children and victimized young men who were and continue to be the victims of gargantuan forced child prostitution rings that operate to service political, corporate and media elites all across the globe.

On June 29 1989, the Washington Times' Paul M. Rodriguez and George Archibald reported on a Washington D.C. prostitution ring that had intimate connections with the White House all the way up to President George H.W. Bush. Male prostitutes had been given access to the White House and the article also cited evidence of "abduction and use of minors for sexual perversion."
In July 1990 a Nebraska Grand Jury was convened to hear allegations that Lawrence "Larry" King, then manager of the Franklin Community Federal Credit Union and a rising Republican party star, along with Washington lobbyists, had set up a child prostitution ring in which minors were transported around the country and forced to have sex with King, other top officials, and according to victims who some allege were later harassed into recanting, then-Vice-President Bush.
Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA) was identified by victims as having engaged in the abuse and in a bizarre twist of fate, appeared on Bill Maher's show last year and made jokes about the outing of Larry Craig as another homosexual Republican.
The Grand Jury dismissed the case as a hoax but former Nebraska State Senator John DeCamp later investigated the claims and was horrified to learn that they were indeed legitimate.

The video which you can watch in full below, Conspiracy of Silence, was produced by British Yorkshire Television and was scheduled to air nationwide in the U.S. on the Discovery Channel on May 3, 1994. Despite appearing in TV guides, the documentary was pulled at the last minute. Key politicians implicated in the scandal intimidated Discovery into canning the program and it was never shown in the U.S.
The documentary team interviewed victims of the Franklin cover-up scandal and proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that Washington's political elite had been involved in Larry King's pedophile ring.
Connections between male prostitutes and the White House emerged again in early 2005, when James Dale Guckert, working under the pseudonym Jeff Gannon, was given privileged access to the White House despite his lack of suitable press credentials. Gannon first came under scrutiny when he repeatedly gave President Bush softball questions during press conferences - leading many to charge Gannon was a White House plant. Photos emerged of Bush embracing Gannon and appearing very affectionate towards him during meetings. It later came out that Gannon had previously placed ads on homosexual escort service websites.
In almost every case of human trafficking for child sex slavery, from Chile to Australia, to Bosnia, to Portugal, to Belgium, court proceedings get shut down or diverted when a clear connection to the elite arises.
In the mid 1990's, convicted child rapist Marc Dutroux built a secret prison cell in his Charleroi basement where he kept abducted young girls hostage at the behest of what he called "a big crime ring," which in the 2004 court case was thought by many to encompass some of Belgium's top politicians, judges and policemen. The reason why it took so long to apprehend Dutroux was that he was being legally protected by these same individuals.
Material witnesses at the trial described "child sex parties involving judges, politicians, bankers and members of the royal family." Victims that managed to survive (most were butchered snuff style after being raped) verified the claims.
Police actually visited Dutroux's home and heard the cries of help from children concealed in his basement yet believed Dutroux's explanation that the sounds were coming from kids playing in the street.
Dutroux was eventually convicted for his role in the pedophile ring but the involvement of the elite of the country was never properly investigated.
After Dyncorp and Halliburton contractors were exposed as having operated child prostitution rackets in the Balkans from the late 1990's onwards (and more recently in the case of Halliburton), Rep. Cynthia McKinney attempted to get answers as to why the U.S. government continued to do business with these corporations.
On March 11th 2005, McKinney grilled Secretary Rumsfeld and General Myers on the Dyncorp scandal and its protection by the U.S. government.
"Mr. Secretary, I watched President Bush deliver a moving speech at the United Nations in September 2003, in which he mentioned the crisis of the sex trade. The President called for the punishment of those involved in this horrible business. But at the very moment of that speech, DynCorp was exposed for having been involved in the buying and selling of young women and children. While all of this was going on, DynCorp kept the Pentagon contract to administer the smallpox and anthrax vaccines, and is now working on a plague vaccine through the Joint Vaccine Acquisition Program. Mr. Secretary, is it [the] policy of the U.S. Government to reward companies that traffic in women and little girls?"
In late 2005, Halliburton subsidiary KBR and Dyncorp lobbyists worked in tandem with the Pentagon to stall legislation that would specifically ban trafficking in humans for forced labor and prostitution by U.S. contractors.
Where were the investigations and convictions in other cases of establishment orchestrated child slavery and prostitution? Like the NATO officials responsible for the mushrooming of child prostitution in Kosovo?
The U.S. media largely failed to even report many of these cases at the time yet Larry Craig's bathroom activities, which are without a doubt perverted, creepy and fully worthy of a disorderly conduct charge, are given a hundred times more press coverage than huge sex slavery scandals with ties to the elite that resulted in the abduction, abuse, rape and murder of thousands of children across the globe - many of which are still missing today.
In addition, Wikipedia allows the page detailing a list of such Republican sex scandals to be deleted by trolls as if no such scandals ever took place!
