Iraqi Shiite, Sunni Clerics Sign Agreement In Mecca To End Sectarian Violence
(RTTNews) - An agreement was signed in Mecca on Friday between Iraqi Shiite and Sunni clerics indicating a halt to sectarian violence in the war torn Iraq, according to reports. The agreement documented that it was against the tenets of Islam to spill Muslim blood, at the end of their two-day meeting in the holy city brought about by the Organization of the Islamic Conference.
The meeting was attended by senior Shiite and Sunni clerics, representatives of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and the top clerics from the Shiite holy city of Najaf, the former leader of Iraq's largest Sunni party and a senior official from the largest Shiite party, the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq. The communiqué enumerates 10 points that are to be adhered to by both communities, which was drafted by a group of four clerics from the two communities at the request of the Organization of the Islamic Conference. The highlight of the document includes forbidding acts of kidnappings, incitement of hatred, attacks on mosques and Shiite places of worship. The document also provides safeguards to two both communities' places of worship, while maintaining the unity and territorial integrity of Iraq. The agreement calls for the release of "all innocent detainees."
