One wonders if the Kurds really thought through the fact that they, unlike Israel, sit on the Iranian border and would be far more vulnerable to retaliation if Israel pulled off some kind of blow against Iran.

I definitely don't think it's been well thought out. People who are aspiring for independence are likely to entertain strange bedfellows and rash judgments towards that end.
